Standards Based Report Cards

Grading System

The South Dakota Department of Education has developed and adopted standards in all academic content areas. Standards are identified for each grade level and each year builds upon the next. Standards identify what students are expected to know and be able to do at each grade level.  At the end of each quarter, you will receive a Standard Based Report Card on how your child is progressing towards mastering the specific standards at the First grade level.  Your child will receive one of the four performance levels:

Below Basic, Basic, Proficient and Advanced

*You and your child should have the goal of being proficient (performing at grade level) by the end of the year.

Advanced: A student performing at the advanced level exceeds grade performance.

Proficient: A student performing at the proficient level meets grade level expectations.

Basic: A student performing at the basic level has not yet met grade level expectations. The student may be able to perform, some, but not all of the grade level skills.

Below Basic: A student performing at the below basic level is performing significantly below

grade level expectations and has not demonstrated basic level performance.

You will soon realize that the best part about the new Standards Based Report Card is that you will have access to information that will allow you to specifically target areas of need in order to best help your child!
